Monogrammist JVL created this piece, "Johannes de Doper," in the 17th century. It is an engraving. During the 17th century, there was great religious and political conflict. This piece depicts John the Baptist, a prominent religious figure. The androgynous and melancholic depiction of John the Baptist is striking. His gaze drifts downwards. Wrapped in fabric, he holds a staff with a white banner. The softness of his features invites an emotional response, a moment of reflection on faith, gender, and identity. Given the religious and political turmoil of the 17th century, images like this served as a focal point for devotion. By presenting an ambiguous figure, the artist perhaps expanded the circle of those who could relate to the image. This engraving asks us to consider traditional religious narratives, and, through an emotional lens, to rethink the stories of the past.
