Francesco Brizio created this small print, Maria Magdalena, using etching, sometime between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The composition, rendered in delicate lines, invites contemplation through its somber mood. Mary Magdalene is depicted in a moment of reflection, her gaze directed upward, framed by cascading curls and drapery. Notice how Brizio uses line and texture to differentiate between the soft skin of Mary and the rough texture of the rocky landscape. The image's power emerges not only from its formal construction but also from its thematic elements related to repentance. Text at the bottom reads SPECULVM POENITENTIA, or mirror of penitence, encouraging the viewer to reflect upon one's actions. The chain around her wrist symbolizes her bondage to sin, yet her gaze suggests transcendence and liberation from earthly constraints. This print thus functions as both an aesthetic object and a semiotic device, conveying complex spiritual ideas through visual means.
