This hat by Katja Robinski is made with soft yellow felt and a painted leather band, and the first thing that strikes me is its materiality, and the way it is put together. I wonder how it feels to wear? Does the artist want us to notice the difference in the textures between the soft felt and the painted leather band? I see the leather as a zone for experimentation. She’s really thinking about how the paint can be applied to the leather, to create different effects. In a way, the band is like a painting in itself. I think that Robinski is asking questions about adornment, and what it means to mark, or paint, an object that is part of the everyday. It makes me think of the playful, expressive marks of Cy Twombly.
