Gunther Gerzso built this painting, Estructura en gris y rojo, with oil paint, though when I look at it, I almost imagine it as a kind of relief sculpture. The colors and shapes feel like they're interlocking, pushing in and out of the picture plane. I love the way the surface has a kind of matte, almost chalky texture, especially in those large grey forms, hinting at something solid beneath the colors. Then there's that craggy, orange-red form at the center, like the broken surface of a planet, which really draws me in. It’s got these subtle cracks and ridges, like it's been through something. Gerzso's got this amazing ability to turn geometric abstraction into something deeply tactile. Looking at this, I'm reminded of other Latin American artists like Joaquín Torres-García, who also played with these ideas of structure and form. It’s a reminder that art isn’t just about what you see, but what you feel.
