This is Gunther Gerzso’s ‘Mansión del Agua’, and what strikes me about it is how these geometric forms kind of hover and stack, a bit like a surreal cityscape made from, well, water. Look at how the brushstrokes seem to work with the shapes, almost like the color has been dragged across them, revealing different tones underneath. It makes you think about how Gerzso built up the painting layer by layer. The texture is so key here; it isn’t just flat color but a kind of history of its making. I'm drawn to that deep brown square. It has such a grounding feeling in the midst of all the cooler hues, anchoring the piece somehow. Gerzso’s work always reminds me of the paintings of someone like Agnes Martin, in the way they create a subtle but powerful sense of space and depth. It’s like looking at a landscape through a kaleidoscope. The magic of painting is that it can hold so many different possibilities at once.
