This silver medal, created by David van der Kellen in 1831, commemorates the heroic death of Jan Carel Josephus van Speijk, a Dutch naval officer. The obverse depicts a female figure representing Fame, holding a palm branch and a wreath, while the reverse features an inscription honoring van Speijk for his sacrifice in defending the Dutch flag on February 5, 1831. This small, but significant, work of art serves as a reminder of Dutch national pride and the bravery of its heroes. The medal is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum.
