Denise Green presents us with a chair, a symbol steeped in cultural significance, rendered in what appears to be a monochrome field. The chair, in its essence, is a symbol of authority, a seat of power that has been depicted throughout history, from ancient thrones to the simple stools of daily life. Consider the evolution of the throne across cultures. Initially a mere seat, it transformed into a symbol of divine right and royal authority. This symbolism is not static, however. The vacant chair invites reflection on absence, loss, or perhaps a challenge to fill a void. The chair here takes on a haunting quality, a psychological space where the viewer might project memories, expectations, or even anxieties about authority. It becomes a vessel, imbued with the weight of history and the burden of the future. This constant return and re-evaluation of symbols remind us that our understanding of the past is always colored by the present.
