Gustav Klimt made this painting, Poppy Field, with oil paint somewhere around the turn of the century, and it’s now here in Vienna. There’s a real emphasis on texture here, it’s built up through tiny marks, like a million little decisions all piling on top of one another. The paint isn’t particularly thick, but the way he layers these little dashes of color, creates this shimmering effect. It’s almost like the field is breathing. Look at how the red poppies pop against the cool greens and blues. Each little dab feels deliberate, yet the overall impression is one of wild abundance. It reminds me a little of Van Gogh, but more restrained, more…Austrian. Both artists share this interest in capturing a subjective experience of the world, but Klimt does it with a kind of quiet intensity. This is a space for contemplation. The ambiguity here is the point, like a visual poem that invites you to wander through its layers, finding new meanings each time.
