Lena Nastasi made this drawing of a silver chalice using graphite and watercolor. I love that it's rendered with such care and attention to detail. Look at the way the light reflects off the surface of the metal, creating highlights and shadows that give the chalice a sense of depth and volume! I can imagine Lena sitting in a quiet room, carefully observing the chalice and trying to capture its essence on paper. I also can't help but think about the history and tradition associated with the chalice itself - the inscriptions "Calvary Church, Santa Cruz, 1871", give it a clear context. Nastasi's simple rendering opens a space for contemplation around time, religion and craftsmanship. It makes me think about other artists who have depicted religious objects, and how each one brings their unique perspective and interpretation to the subject.
