Henry Nielsen made this landscape, filled with houses, using black ink on a plate. I can see how the ink, in its darkness and boldness, defines the houses and the land as if they are emerging from a shadow, or perhaps, returning to it. Imagine him, Nielsen, alone, drawing and scraping back. It is like he is trying to find the essence of a place, a feeling, rather than just depicting what is in front of him. It’s not about being pretty. The strokes are robust, direct, and unapologetic. See how the marks create a sense of depth and movement. This reminds me that paintings are not just images. They are a record of an action, a trace of the artist’s hand and mind at work. Maybe Nielsen found a way to express something beyond the surface. I can imagine him working late into the night, wrestling with the plate, trying to get something just right, something that perhaps, he couldn’t quite name. The conversation between artists, across time, is so great.
