Henry Nielsen made this etching, Landskab med vej og huse, in nineteen-thirty. It’s a landscape with a road and houses, like the title says, but it feels more like a collection of lines and marks than a picture of a place. I love how you can really see the process in this work. The lines are so raw and direct, and they build up to create this really cool texture. It’s not about being slick or perfect, it’s about the act of making. Look at the way the lines in the foreground are scratched into the plate, so urgent. It's like Nielsen was trying to capture the feeling of the landscape, not just what it looked like. This reminds me of some of the early modernists, like Kirchner, who were also interested in using expressive lines and marks to convey emotion. But Nielsen has his own voice, his own way of seeing and feeling the world. It’s a good reminder that art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists and ideas.
