Curatorial notes

This photograph, "Verdamplichaam en drie kookpannen," shows an industrial interior, probably made with a large-format camera that captured an incredible amount of detail. I'm drawn to the tonal range here, where the light and shadow create a landscape of textures, and the repetitive forms give a feeling of momentum. The photograph's surface is smooth, allowing the image's details to come forward. It has captured the texture of the riveted metal with the soft light that almost seems to glow. Look at the way the photographer has captured the repeating shapes of the tanks. The three "kookpannen" stand in a row and give a rhythm to the composition. The photograph reminds me a little of Charles Sheeler's precisionist paintings, which similarly captured the beauty and geometry of industrial architecture. Like Sheeler, Atelier H. Gleysteen invites us to find beauty in the mundane, challenging our perceptions and showing us new ways of seeing the world around us. It's a reminder that art is everywhere if we know where to look.
