"Landschap met een figuur in een dal" (Landscape with a Figure in a Valley) is a sketch created between 1840 and 1847 by Johannes Tavenraat. This work is housed at the Rijksmuseum, and is an example of Tavenraat's use of pen and ink, and a wash, to capture a landscape scene. While the scene is not entirely clear, it suggests the drama of a figure, possibly a shepherd, silhouetted against the rugged cliffs and trees of the valley. This sketch exemplifies Tavenraat's interest in the landscape and his ability to translate it onto paper.
