This is Johannes Tavenraat’s "Landscape with a Figure in a Valley," created in 1847 using pen in brown ink and brush in gray. The drawing masterfully balances depth with its sparse composition of tones and minimal detail. Tavenraat uses the interplay of light and shadow to shape our perception. Notice how the darker, densely filled areas contrast sharply with the blank spaces, creating a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective.
