Robert A. Young made this sewing cabinet sometime between 1855 and 1955, it's not dated but you can see it on paper. I can see the care that's gone into it, it's such a controlled palette of browns and creams. The wood grain is so visible and the shadows give it a lot of depth. You can almost feel the smoothness of the wood. I like the little pointy things that go all around the outside of the top layer. It's like a tiny castle! The stitches on the pin cushion are a bit looser, softer. It's a pleasing contrast to the neat carpentry on the main structure. It reminds me a little of Joseph Yoakum, the way he created these imagined scenes in such a delicate way. I love the way that artists can communicate and build on each others ideas in ways that connect us across time. There's something about this that just feels so comforting and familiar.
