Curator: Camilla d’Errico created this striking work, “Ajna,” in 2017. It appears to be acrylic on canvas. What do you make of it? Editor: My first thought is, 'mesmerizing and unsettling.' That central eye immediately grabs you, doesn’t it? There’s something almost mythological about this figure. Curator: Absolutely. D’Errico is known for blending pop surrealism with manga influences, and here we see her exploring themes of consciousness and perception through symbolism. The third eye, the ‘Ajna’ chakra, represents intuition and insight in Hindu tradition. Editor: Yes, and that's echoed in the heterochromatic eyes, one violet, the other orange. The color variance alone speaks volumes about seeing differently, perhaps about encompassing diverse perspectives. The whole figure emerging from the water, surrounded by floral motifs and insects…it feels rich with layered symbolism. Curator: The monochrome floral wreath is an interesting choice against the more vivid hues of her face and hair, don’t you think? There’s a tension created between those vibrant, hopeful colors and the muted tones of the flowers. This creates a commentary of both life and death that's visually presented for the observer to grasp and reflect upon. Editor: Precisely! Water, of course, often symbolizes the subconscious. It might even suggests the emergence of intuitive insight, the unfolding of a new way of perceiving. And what's most fascinating is the fact that you almost immediately get an intimate sensation just by witnessing the artwork in front of you, giving the impression the child it's reaching the viewer from the "inside out", as a personal journey into spirituality. Curator: The use of this naivistic fantasy style is quite cunning when talking about potentially heavy and spiritual topics such as those discussed. With this image in mind, you can only start wondering how d’Errico's artistic journey allows contemporary audiences to reconsider the nature of imagery within the art market. Editor: It does leave you pondering the relationship between visual language and the exploration of consciousness. It is the case, indeed.
