Carlos Sablòn, born in 1981, painted “Advertissement à Madame de Montespan” with oils, conjuring a world of dreams, or maybe nightmares! I imagine Sablòn standing before the canvas, brush in hand, letting the image emerge from the depths of his mind. The lady’s ornate headdress, adorned with flowers and branches, is a surreal extension of her thoughts. And what about the bird's nest perched precariously on a branch? What does it all mean? The flowing lines of her dress, rendered in shades of red and orange, create a sense of movement, as if she’s about to step out of the frame. The brushstrokes are smooth and deliberate, yet there’s an air of spontaneity, like the artist is in dialogue with the painting. Maybe Sablòn was thinking about the fleeting nature of beauty, or the hidden desires that lie beneath the surface of polite society. Whatever his inspiration, he has added his voice to the ongoing conversation between painters across time, inspiring us to see the world in new and unexpected ways.
