"Buiten," or "Outside," is an undated print by Gerhardus Philippus Zalsman. Zalsman lived during a time of significant social and economic change in Europe. The industrial revolution transformed traditional life, impacting class structures and gender roles. The print offers vignettes into rural life, but don’t be fooled by the superficial representation of the idyllic. Here, the weight of labor and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships reveal societal expectations of that period. Images of women working in the fields are juxtaposed with scenes of domestic interactions, offering glimpses into their multifaceted roles. Yet, this work also subtly acknowledges the constraints placed on women, confined by class and gender. Consider the emotional undercurrent present in the depiction of the workers, their resilience, and their struggle. Zalsman’s piece captures the visual culture and social dynamics, inviting viewers to consider the narratives embedded within its composition. It challenges us to reflect on the ways in which labor, class, and gender intersect in shaping individual lives and broader cultural narratives.
