This is a postcard to Willem Bogtman by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst. It's almost like peeking into someone's private thoughts, isn't it? A space where text becomes image. Imagine Holst, pen in hand, carefully forming each letter. The words are like brushstrokes, layering up a message, but also creating a visual texture. I'm sympathizing with Holst as he's trying to decide what to write. How to fill this tiny rectangle with something meaningful. Maybe he paused, pen hovering, considering how to convey what’s in his head. There's a rhythm to the handwriting that seems to communicate feeling and intention. It makes me think about the way artists are always writing to each other, in a sense. Through their work, they are in conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Ultimately, there is an ambiguity here which allows for multiple interpretations, leaving us wondering about the full story behind this card.
