This monochrome photograph by G. Hidderley captures a view of the Nicolaaskerk in Amsterdam. Look at how the light flickers across the surface of the canal, mirroring the buildings on either side. I wonder what it was like for Hidderley, setting up the camera, carefully framing the composition to capture this perfect reflection. The surface of the water is so still it almost looks solid, like a sheet of glass. Notice the way the buildings lean slightly, adding a sense of precariousness to the scene. There’s such a satisfying geometry, you know, how the rigid verticality of the architecture is softened by the gentle curves of the bridge and the dome of the church, creating a dialogue between the man-made and the organic. For me it's all about how artists, across different mediums, engage with similar themes and visual language, each pushing the boundaries of their craft.
