Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this decorative design with color indications on graph paper. I love that the design is on graph paper—it gives the impression of planning, carefulness, and attention to symmetry. I imagine Lion Cachet sitting at a desk, perhaps at home, perhaps in a studio, with a pencil in hand, carefully drawing and shading. The floral ornaments seem to be reaching out, with their swirling motifs growing slowly, bit by bit. Each mark and measurement contributes to the whole, coming into being through trial, error, and intuition. I wonder if Lion Cachet thought about the final form that his design would take? I mean, you could see it on fabric, furniture, or even as a wallpaper print. Thinking about it, artists are in an ongoing conversation across time, exchanging ideas and inspiring each other’s creativity. And painting—well, it's an expression, embracing ambiguity, allowing endless interpretations.
