Curatorial notes
This carte de visite by Maria Biermé, made with ink on card, is a world in miniature. I love how the text, a personal message, becomes the artwork itself. The ink isn’t just information; it's a physical presence, a kind of choreography on paper. The lines are wispy and full of energy, each stroke a little dance. Look at how the loops and curves of the handwriting almost become abstract shapes. There's a real sense of the hand, the body, in these marks. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, but more intimate, more like a whisper. It’s like Biermé is thinking aloud, letting her thoughts spill onto the card with a beautiful, almost reckless abandon. Artmaking is about opening up, letting things flow, and trusting the process, right? We should all be so brave, so willing to make our mark, even on something as fleeting as a business card.
