“Coverlet” is a handwoven wool coverlet created in 1834 by American artist David Daniel Haring. The coverlet is a striking example of the art of early American textile production. It is notable for its intricate geometric designs, in this case woven in a black and white palette. The piece is adorned with stylized floral motifs, stars, and birds, forming a dense, repeating pattern. The coverlet includes a central inscription commemorating the birth of Sarah Ann Outwater on January 14, 1834, which highlights the coverlet's intended function as a commemorative gift. It is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
