Eugene Feldman made this print, Headlights on West River Drive 1, at some point in the mid-twentieth century, and right away I notice how he’s working with opposites: dark and light, hard and soft. It feels immediate, like an experiment. The grainy texture of the white ink against the smooth black is just so satisfying. It makes me think about the physicality of printmaking – the pressure, the layering, the reveal. Look at how the light seems to burst from the lower left corner, all soft and hazy, then sharpens into streaks as it moves across the black. It's like a photograph, but more emotional, more felt. I’m reminded of Rauschenberg’s prints, how he also used found imagery and raw textures to capture a moment in time. Both artists leave space for ambiguity. Is it a real place? A memory? Or something else entirely? That's for us to decide.
