This card was sent to Philip Zilcken by Vittorio Pica and postmarked in Venice in 1903. You know, sometimes just seeing the trace of communication is enough. I wonder, was the sender thinking about the receiver when they chose this card? What was happening at the Venice Biennale that year? What did Zilcken think of it all? The stamp and seal feel like the brushstrokes of everyday life, layering and marking the surface with moments in time. They remind me that painting too is a conversation—between the artist, the materials, and ultimately, us, the viewers. There's a vulnerability in sharing something so exposed, like sending a message into the void. Yet, it’s in that very act of exposure that true connection happens. This little card captures that beautifully.
