Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this sketch, Rozetten en een kandelaar, with pencil, we don't know exactly when. It's amazing to think of Cachet sitting with his sketchbook, trying out these different ideas for rosettes and a candelabra. Look how lightly he’s drawn the lines; it's like he's thinking aloud on paper, letting the images emerge tentatively. You can almost see him experimenting, rubbing out and redrawing, searching for the right form. These overlapping circles have a kind of playful quality, like bubbles floating on the page. And the candelabra – it’s not just a functional object, but something with its own character and presence. This drawing reminds me that art is as much about the process of discovery as it is about the final product. I like how Cachet embraced that, inviting us to witness his thinking in real-time. He is an artist in conversation with himself.
