The "Highboy" is a tall, ornate chest of drawers made of wood that was carved by Spikey Leaf Carver sometime between 1760 and 1780. This piece of furniture features elaborate carving in the rococo style on the top and bottom, as well as elegant cabriole legs. It was likely intended for both functional and decorative purposes. The piece is currently in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It’s large size (86 x 44 x 21 1/2 inches) and intricate carving attest to the skill of its maker. This "Highboy" exemplifies American furniture making during the 18th century.
Comments
Recent scholarship has suggested that the carving on this chest was done by an unknown craftsman, now called the "Spikey Leaf Carver," as the spikey veins of his leaves run off the edge of the wood.
