Curatorial notes

Karl Bodmer created this print, “Vogel op een distel,” or “Bird on a Thistle,” sometime in the 19th century. Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, illustrator, designer, painter, and draftsman who was part of the Barbizon School, an art movement towards Realism. In this piece, we see a bird perched on a spiky thistle. There is a contrast here between the softness of the bird’s feathers and the sharp thorns of the plant. While this could be seen as a beautiful image of nature, the thistle plant has, at times, been used to represent pain, hardship, and evil. The emotional juxtaposition created by the bird resting amongst the thorns is intriguing. Bodmer’s choice suggests a statement about resilience, or even a subtle critique of societal hardships, reflecting on the personal struggle to find moments of peace amidst life’s challenges.
