This drawing by Alevtyna Kakhidze, probably made with coloured pencils or crayons, is so full of subtle observation and quiet narrative. I can see her hand moving across the page, feeling out the shapes and forms of the figures, the table, and those little bursts of colour that are the flowers. I imagine her standing there, maybe in a market, quickly trying to capture the scene before it disappears. There's a kind of awkwardness to the figures that I really appreciate – their slightly outsized hands, their simple shapes. And those flowers! They’re so vibrant against the pale background. Are those peonies? It reminds me of other artists who use drawing as a way to think and record, like David Hockney or Elizabeth Peyton. This piece feels like a little gem. It’s part of an ongoing conversation between artists across time and place, each of us trying to make sense of the world through marks and colours.
