Eyvind Earle made this painting called 'Sunset Flame' with what looks like thin layers of glaze, kind of like see-through colors layered over each other. It's this layering thing that gets me, because art's always about process, right? It's like building something up, letting it dry, then adding another layer, and seeing what happens. I can almost feel the smoothness of the surface, but then there are these little bumps and textures in the paint, especially around the dark, round shapes. They look like bushes or something, but they're also just these blobs of dark against the bright colors. And the colors, wow, they're not exactly natural, are they? The yellow is so intense, it almost burns, and then it fades into this deep, cool blue. There's this tension between the hot and cold colors, it's like a visual push and pull. Earle reminds me a bit of someone like Arthur Dove, who also went for these simplified, almost abstract landscapes. But Earle's got this Disney vibe, which I guess makes sense since he worked for them. It's like he's trying to find the magic in the everyday, but in a slightly weird, dreamlike way.
