Eyvind Earle made this painting, Quiet Solitude, with layers of thin paint meticulously applied, building up this otherworldly landscape bit by bit. I can imagine him, brush in hand, really going for it, getting lost in the details of each little tree and bush. He must have been such a patient person! There's a kind of dreamy quality, and that bright yellow path leading your eye into the distance, a place between reality and imagination. I'm thinking about other painters, too. Maybe it's his own take on something earlier, or maybe another painter will see this and take it someplace else! It's like a game of telephone, ideas stretching out and influencing each other. For me, painting is about that exchange, that conversation across time, and across the world. It's really about seeing.
