Ray Price made this lovely drawing of a Doll at some point during his long life, using what looks like watercolor or gouache on paper. The muted palette and delicate lines give the doll a sense of quiet dignity. The artist’s hand is very present; you can see the layering of the paint and the subtle variations in tone. Look at the way the red of the belt pops against the creamy white of the dress. And the floral embroidery on one sleeve adds a touch of whimsy, softening the formality of the composition. The doll is depicted with such care and attention to detail, from the stitching on her dress to the tiny shoes peeking out from under the hem. It reminds me of the work of outsider artists like Bill Traylor, who found beauty in the everyday and imbued their subjects with a profound sense of presence. Price really invites us to see the world through his unique lens.
