Editor: Here we have Eldora Lorenzini's "Santo-bulto," created in 1938 using watercolor and other drawing media. I find the earth tones give it an antique feel, almost like looking at a very old photograph, but I am intrigued by its slightly uncanny feel. What can you tell us about it? Curator: You’re right, there is something spectral about it. I like to think of "Santo-bulto" as a portal, actually. Lorenzini doesn't just give us a representation of folk art, the sculpture of a saint, but seems to invite us to glimpse a certain sensibility through it. I wonder, how does the handling of light and shadow influence your sense of its mood? Editor: It’s quite subtle, isn’t it? The shading around the eyes and hands especially lends a solemn, quiet quality to the piece. The eyes really do appear human. Curator: Exactly! The almost sepia-toned palette evokes a sense of reverence, but it also encourages us to consider the artistry inherent in folk traditions. How does it make you think about spirituality and art? The intentional depiction of this object in watercolor makes you pause. Why create art about art? Editor: I see what you mean; there’s a layered element. The artist seems to be prompting us to consider a whole tradition of devotional folk art, which I hadn't really considered much before. I appreciate the thought behind the choices! Curator: It is rather beautiful to sit and reflect upon an artform representing another! Thank you. Editor: Thanks, I enjoyed learning more about this painting!
