Adolf Wölfli made "Die Delphine; Ein absolutt, ungefährlicher Riesen=Vogel" using colored pencil, a humble material, but one which allowed him absolute control over the distribution of color. The density of the pigment, built up layer upon layer, gives the artwork a palpable texture. Wölfli applied the colored pencil with an almost obsessive intensity, creating a vibrant and visually arresting image. He wasn't formally trained, yet he developed a highly personal style, characterized by intricate patterns and a flattening of pictorial space. He was committed to these working methods, working day after day to make his art. The labor involved in such a handmade work underscores Wölfli’s commitment to his craft. The artwork challenges traditional notions of fine art, inviting us to consider the value of process, obsession, and materiality in creative expression. It is a powerful testament to the expressive potential inherent in the simplest of means.
