Joe Deal’s photograph ‘Day Care Home, Phillips Ranch, California’ captures a slice of suburban life in monochrome tones, like a memory fading to gray. The texture of this image is intriguing; the sharp focus on the house with its shingled roof, contrasts with the soft blur of the distant hills. Look at the way Deal frames the composition, flattening the space, so that the house almost seems to press against the landscape. It’s as if he’s saying something about how we build our worlds, neatly compartmentalized, yet always bumping up against the unruly mess of nature. The open garage, with its jumble of strollers and shadowy car, feels almost theatrical, like a stage set for the everyday dramas of family life. This piece reminds me a bit of Ed Ruscha’s deadpan photographs of Los Angeles architecture. Both artists share an interest in documenting the vernacular landscape, finding beauty in the ordinary. Deal’s work, however, has a certain quiet intimacy, a sense of lived-in space that invites contemplation.
