Editor: This is "Ivy Bridge, Devon," by John Inigo Richards. It's an oil on canvas, and I find the textures so compelling, especially the contrast between the rough stonework and the soft foliage. What do you make of this composition? Curator: The composition is structured around a clear diagonal axis, from the lower left foreground to the upper right, drawing the eye through the landscape. Note how the bridge's arch mimics the gentle curve of the land, creating a visual echo. Editor: That's interesting. It does bring a sense of balance, even with the asymmetry. Curator: Precisely. The artist uses light and shadow to further define form, highlighting the structural integrity of the bridge against the natural elements. Notice how the dark trees frame the scene. Editor: I see it now. Thanks, it really brings out the artist's focus on structure and form. Curator: Indeed, Richards masterfully uses these formal elements to create a harmonious and visually engaging landscape.

This charming landscape shows the old gothic bridge over the river Erme, near Plymouth in Devon. It was clearly a favourite subject with Richards for he painted it on several occasions, both in oil and watercolour. Richards could be said to have anticipated its appeal as a picturesque subject, for the rustic Ivy Bridge was later painted by numerous artists, including Paul Sandby and J.M.W. Turner.Richards was a painter of theatrical scenery as well as of topographical views such as this. He was a founder member, and later Secretary, of the Royal Academy and was the god-son of William Hogarth with whom he occasionally collaborated. Gallery label, September 2004
