Andries Stock’s 1623 engraving, "Portret van Maurits, prins van Oranje", is a classic example of Dutch portraiture. It depicts Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange, a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age. The composition is characteristic of the period, showcasing Maurice in a three-quarter view, with his hand resting on a sword hilt. His elaborate attire, including a richly patterned doublet and a velvet robe, emphasizes his status and power. The inscription at the bottom of the engraving, "Ie Maintiendray" (I will maintain), reflects Maurice's determination to defend the Netherlands against foreign threats. The image is held at the Rijksmuseum.
