Sergey Piskunov's "Pop Art Mouse" is a contemporary artwork rendered in oil on canvas, a traditional fine art medium used to explore the culture of design. The artist has represented a cartoon mouse assembled out of clear plastic wrapping filled with commercial graphics: comic book explosions, and images of Snoopy, all printed on a pink ground. These are the disposable materials of childhood – balloons, perhaps, or party decorations. Their combination and construction into the form of a familiar cartoon is where the art lies. By choosing a subject matter that explicitly references consumer culture, Piskunov blurs the boundaries between art and commerce. The meticulous realism achieved with oil paint elevates these mundane materials to the level of fine art. "Pop Art Mouse" invites us to consider the cultural significance we assign to mass-produced imagery and how artists can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through skillful technique.
