This decorative dish presents a striking contrast between its dark, possibly patinated metal surface and the shimmering, golden-coloured floral motifs. Note how the anonymous maker has arranged these elements to create a dual visual experience. The outer ring features densely packed, stylized flowers and foliage, generating a sense of abundance and opulence. Conversely, the central field contains a coat of arms, which offers a glimpse into heraldic traditions and perhaps hints at the status of the dish's original owner. The figure on the crest, armed with bow and arrow, crowns the shield in a powerful display of dynastic authority. This contrasts with the delicacy of the surrounding floral designs. Consider how this interplay of motifs and metallic finishes, both decorative and symbolic, transforms a functional object into a statement of taste and status. It serves as a reminder that aesthetic appreciation is always shaped by, and reflective of, cultural values and historical contexts.

Lacquerware was a prized luxury product, with its rich gold decorations on a dark black background. This decorative dish was a special order as it bears the coat-of-arms of Joan van Huydecoper van Maarsseveen. In addition to being burgomaster of Amsterdam, he was director of the VOC, and so had the right connections to order lacquerware in Japan.
