Alfred Freddy Krupa made this photograph, of what I presume is a bonfire under construction, using black and white film. I think, here, that the process of building this thing *is* the artwork. I wonder what Krupa was thinking when he made it? Maybe about the history of bonfires, from pagan rituals to Guy Fawkes night! Or maybe it was about the simple joy of building something big and impressive. I love the contrast between the hard, geometric shapes of the pallets and the organic, flowing lines of the river and sky. The lone pole sticking up in the middle really draws you in, too. It reminds me a little of some of the sculptures of Eva Hesse or maybe even the stacked objects of folk artist Hawkins Bolden. It's all connected, you know? Artists are always in conversation, influencing each other across time. You can see something and it triggers a memory, a feeling, an idea. And that's how art keeps evolving.
