Alfred Freddy Krupa made "Below The Bridge of Freedom" using a monochrome palette and sharp focus to create an image of dereliction, depth and decay. I am immediately drawn to the contrast between the rigid geometric structures and the fluid reflections in the water below. The pipes above have a rhythmic, almost musical quality, while the graffiti adds a layer of human touch to the industrial scene. Notice how the artist plays with light and shadow to create a sense of depth. This open doorway is an especially potent form, especially as it is reflected in the water, suggesting both the possibility of escape and the haunting sense of entrapment. It reminds me a bit of the early industrial photography of the Bechers, but with a more personal and emotive quality. Ultimately, this photograph is an invitation to consider the relationship between freedom, decay, and the hidden beauty found in unexpected places.
