Skirt c. 20th century

This skirt was made at some point by Lao. Look at that incredible base of green, striped with pale yellows. What a great starting point. Then, down at the hem, a border explodes with color, with tiny diamonds of red, blue, and gold. It's so neat and decorative, but also quite homespun, with its imperfections. I love how the artist just went for it! I wonder about the maker and how it felt to create. What was she thinking about as she was weaving? What conversations did she have while embroidering? Maybe that’s the beauty of art: it’s like a quiet conversation with the artist that transcends time. They’ve left this object, this idea, and we get to pick it up and run with it. That’s how artists keep the world in motion!
