This is a skirt, made by Lao, and here it is, right here in Minneapolis. It's like a painting but with fabric and thread. Look at the body of the skirt, the vertical stripes. They aren’t perfect, more like guidelines, suggesting this wasn't about rigid perfection, more about a kind of natural rhythm. Then your eye hits the bottom, BAM! A riot of colours and shapes. The embroidery is so detailed, you can almost feel the maker's hands moving, choosing each colour, each stitch. You get the feeling the artist was having a conversation with the material. Think about Sophie Taeuber-Arp, she was also interested in the conversation between geometry and the body. Art isn’t just about what you see, but about feeling, imagining, and making connections. This skirt is an invitation to do just that.
