This is Marc Chagall's "Les Fiancés au cirque", which translates to "The betrothed at the circus" in English. It is made with oil on canvas, and it’s all about how artmaking is a journey, not just a destination. The texture is dreamy, isn’t it? Soft around the edges, like memory. There's a lot of blue, a blue that's melancholic but hopeful, with these pops of red and yellow that pull you in. Look at the way the paint is applied, kinda thick, kinda thin, sometimes transparent, sometimes not, like he's figuring it out as he goes along. See the yellow horse? How it’s not quite there, not quite real? I love how it connects the earthy and grounded with the dreamlike quality of the circus. Chagall reminds me a bit of Paul Klee, they're both so good at making the invisible visible. He really invites us to embrace the messiness of emotions, and the beauty of not knowing.
