Marc Chagall made 'L’hiver' using oil paint, with a real sense of layering and building up of colour, like memory itself. Look how the paint handling is so direct, the marks are like pathways into the painting, and there's a real freedom in the colours. Take that central figure, her dress is awash with strokes of yellow, green and blue, which cascade like light. The colours feel both grounded and totally dreamlike. And look at the townscape below, like a memory emerging from the depths. Chagall always reminds me of the Fauves like Matisse, that same joy in colour, but with a narrative twist. I love how he embraces ambiguity, inviting us to wander through his personal world, one full of floating figures, musicians and memories.
