Robert Burian took this untitled photograph of a couple dancing sometime in 1964. It’s so small, only about 5 by 3 and a half inches, but it’s packed with atmosphere. The black and white tones make it seem like it could be any time, but the woman's hair and the man's sharp suit definitely say early 60s. Look at the way they’re posed, slightly off-center, but with these bright smiles and their hands lightly clasped. It really conveys the energy of a dance, the joy of just being in the moment. There's this little paper frame around the image, like a memory carefully preserved, with those enigmatic numbers scribbled on the border - 358 over 131. It reminds me a bit of some of the snapshots that Warhol collected, just capturing these fleeting moments of life. With Warhol, and here, there's this real sense of honoring the everyday. The beauty's not in perfection, but in catching a glimpse of something real.
