Untitled (young man and woman dancing) 1965
Dimensions 12.7 x 8.89 cm (5 x 3 1/2 in.)
This is a small, black and white photograph of a young couple dancing, and it seems to come from January '65. The artist, Robert Burian, captured what feels like a very special moment, maybe a school dance, a wedding, or some other fancy occasion. I wonder what it was like to be Burian, watching them twirl. They are frozen in time, but in my mind they keep moving. I try to imagine the smell of hairspray and the taste of stale champagne. The composition is pretty straightforward. It's an unpretentious shot, yet it has that dreamy quality that is so particular to photos taken from that time. There’s also this off-beat touch on the yellow border around the image with its own writing, which transforms the picture into more of an archival object, or a found object. It is like he found this picture and wanted to frame it and remember it forever. And now we get to experience it!
