This untitled work was made by Mathias Goeritz and is comprised of concentric circles of tiny perforations on a metallic surface. These circles, reminiscent of tree rings, ripple out from the center. The material has a tactile quality, the small indentations invite close inspection and even touch. The patinated surface suggests the passage of time, a subtle indicator of the labor-intensive process required to make it. In crafting this artwork, Goeritz engaged with traditions of metalworking, skills honed over generations. The repetitive nature of the perforations speaks to the industrial age, and the ways in which labor and production are so tightly woven together. While its circular form echoes natural phenomena, the artwork is also testament to the transformative power of human touch.
