I'm getting a strong sense of height, looking at the photograph, a little dizzying actually, but what catches your eye? Curator: Oh, the photograph has such a stillness. For me, I'm drawn to the light—how it delicately catches the arches and vaults, almost whispering secrets of the past. Can you imagine the monks who once walked these aisles? Their chants echoing where our footsteps now fall? It almost feels like stepping back in time. Editor: Yeah, I can see that. The historical element gives a sense of time standing still. And the cross looming large is hard to ignore. What's its significance, do you think? Curator: That cross… It’s a stark reminder, isn’t it? The weight of history, the burden of faith. But also, a focal point drawing our eye upward. Notice how the photographer used the architecture, the perspective, to guide our gaze. Did you feel a pull upward at first sight too? Or were you firmly planted on the ground, eyeing the composition as a whole? Editor: Definitely upward. Thinking about it now, maybe that's part of why it felt dizzying—the upward pull! The way they captured that soaring space... Amazing for a photograph. Curator: Photography allows one to be instantly transported; though it lacks colour, which can make our senses wonder how colour enriches or subtracts the intent of its making. Looking at this now it makes one ask whether the artist knew this abbey may withstand hundreds of years; I also feel quite still wondering who might discover me and my artistic relics one hundred years later, too! Editor: That is such a great perspective, imagining your art being examined centuries from now. Curator: Thanks. It's all connected. From the monk’s prayers to a photographer's careful composition, to us standing here interpreting it all today, isn’t it? Editor: Absolutely. This was great, thank you.
