This monochromatic photograph captures the interior of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. It's such a process to take a photograph, and in some ways that's very similar to painting! It's an interesting way of working, this image-making. I love the way the light pours in through the arched windows, hitting the pulpit, kind of like a stage, and reflecting on the pews below. Look at the variations in tone, from the velvety shadows to the soft light. The surfaces are smooth, but the details of the architecture are all there, with those little lines everywhere that feel like searching, like something is about to appear. It's like the way the eye moves when you look at a painting, always discovering new little worlds, or the way your hand hovers as you consider where to lay down the next mark. For me, this photograph echoes the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, who created a dialogue between objectivity and subjectivity and between industrial and architectural space, emphasizing how it continues to be such an important moment in the conversation of art. It's a reminder that art is always a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas across time.
