This print of a moon, with calligraphy, was made by Suga Kisui in 19th century Japan, using woodblock printing. Look closely and you can see how this process has everything to do with the image's impact. Woodblock printing is a relief process. The artist carves away the areas that will not be inked, leaving the design raised on the block. This block is then inked and pressed onto paper, transferring the image. The flat, graphic quality of the moon, and the delicate texture of the red background, are direct results of this technique. Each petal is carefully carved, and each line of text is the product of steady hands and sharp tools. The labor involved in the production process is considerable. The carving requires skilled artisans, and the printing requires precision and care. The materials themselves – the wood, the paper, the ink – each have their own history and cultural significance. Appreciating this print means recognizing the artistry inherent in its making, which brings us closer to the world of 19th century Japan.
