This is a bronze medal, made by Suzan Rey around 1700, depicting the reverse side of a Jubilee Door. The door itself, with the year 1700 inscribed below, is flanked by Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The symbol of the door, especially in a Jubilee year, is a powerful one. It hearkens back to ancient Roman traditions where city gates were potent symbols of transition and protection. Consider how similar motifs appear in ancient Egyptian art, with monumental gateways signifying passages to other realms. The religious symbolism connects the individual soul's journey to the collective human longing for salvation. The act of passing through such a door becomes a symbolic rebirth. It speaks to the individual's subconscious desire for renewal. Even in our modern, secular world, the door remains a potent image, evoking transitions, opportunities, and the unknown. Observe its cyclical recurrence, evolving through different contexts, yet still resonating with our deepest fears and hopes.
